The Arab Spring liberated characters and brightened faces

About the Artist

Baseem Al Rais is a Syrian artist who was born in 1970. He holds a BA in Agricultural engineering from the Damascus University. He is a member of the Fine Arts Association in Damascus – Syria, as well as the Emirates Fine Arts Association in Sharjah.

Critics believe that the man in Baseem’s paintings morphs into an unrealistic creature. Others go to other extremes and think that the man manifests into a monster.

Going metaphysically, the real human traits come to the surface with a sincere touch of transparency and cordiality and the personality succumbs to unfulfilled dreams and shattered hopes.

Baseem Al Rais: Many people have pale eyes, and it is rare to see somebody with a glowing look reflecting the stamina, vitality and love of life with all the tiny details.

Baseem’s narrative personality helps him to capture the hearts of his viewers, exploring their inner soul and glow of their eyes.

Baseem Al Rais: Evidently, all the people I have seen for a long time do lack the glow in their eyes.

He is always on guard, fully empathizing with the transformation that his character undergoes. Yet, he cannot wait to see his heroes come into being just as a lover is desperately sought in a tryst.

Baseem Al Rais: The characters are bustling with life, unshackled of all ties, brushstrokes are liberated from the academic rules and the colors are more joyful. It is a revolution.
